Resetting Your Priorities When Your To-Do List Gets Overwhelming

When the To-Do List Gets Tossed

October 21, 2026•11 min read

“Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is throw out the plan that no longer fits and give yourself permission to start fresh.”

Well, I think I've officially reached that point in the week where I'm considering tossing the entire damn to-do list and starting over. LOL. Seriously, I sat down to review everything today, looked at what was left, what had been added, what had been cancelled and what had been moved around, and all I could think was UGH! You know that feeling when you've spent so much time organizing something that eventually the organization itself starts becoming another chore? Yeah, that's about where I'm at right now. I've got things crossed off, things moved to different days, things that no longer need to happen and a whole bunch of new things that apparently decided they needed a spot on the calendar too. At this point, I'm not entirely sure whether I'm managing the to-do list or the to-do list is managing me.

And before anyone starts thinking I've suddenly decided to abandon all my responsibilities and run off into the sunset, don't get too excited. LOL. I'm not throwing in the towel. I'm just looking at everything I've got going on and realizing that the plan I made a few days ago doesn't necessarily fit the reality I'm working with today. And honestly, that's okay. Something I've been reminding myself of quite a bit lately is that just because I made a plan doesn't mean I'm obligated to follow it right off a cliff. Sometimes things change, priorities shift, and what made perfect sense on Monday looks completely ridiculous by Wednesday.

Which brings me to the fact that I'm only NOW sitting down to write today's blog. at 7:15pm Tonight. Not this morning with my coffee, not during my usual little window of writing time, but after a day that somehow managed to disappear between distractions, farmers working in the fields, a slight headache, some cleaning and a whole lot of planning. And you know what? That's just life around here sometimes. Living in the country means there are days when things happening outside your window are just as much a part of your day as what's happening on your computer screen. Especially during harvest season, when there's machinery moving, fields being worked and a constant reminder that the seasons are changing whether we're ready for them or not.

And speaking of changing seasons, apparently Mother Nature has decided it's time to start threatening us with that horrible four-letter word. You know the one. Starts with S, ends with W, and we're not ready to acknowledge its existence yet. LOL. Yep, there's s**w showing up in the forecast, along with temperatures dropping below freezing, and I'm sitting here wondering how the hell we went from enjoying autumn sunshine to thinking about winter preparations already. I mean, I know we live in Alberta, and I know this happens every single year, but that doesn't mean I have to be happy about it. I'm still mentally hanging on to those beautiful fall days, thank you very much.

I may even fire up the wood stove tonight, not because the house is unbearably cold, but just to take that damp chill out of the air. There's something about the first few fires of the season that I actually do enjoy, even if I'm not particularly thrilled about what comes next. The warmth, the smell of wood, that cozy feeling when the house starts to settle into its winter rhythm. It's one of those little things about country living that I genuinely love. Of course, it also comes with the realization that I need to get my ass in gear and start getting the house ready for the months ahead. Because once winter really decides to show up around here, there's no pretending it's just going to change its mind and leave. LOL.

So with a few calls and meetings already scheduled over the next couple of days, I've decided that I need to make some serious time for getting the house organized. Not just the usual dishes, laundry and quick tidy-ups that happen throughout the week, but actually going through things, figuring out what needs attention before winter and getting some of those little jobs handled before they turn into bigger headaches. It's amazing how quickly things pile up when you've been travelling, working, catching up from travelling, working some more and then trying to squeeze in a little bit of normal life somewhere in between.

And while I'm at it, I think my business could use a little of that same attention.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about burning everything down and starting from scratch. Although, knowing me, I'm sure the thought will cross my mind at least once while I'm staring at a screen wondering why something isn't doing what I want it to do. LOL. What I'm talking about is taking a proper look at what I've built, what I'm working toward and whether everything is still organized in a way that makes sense for where I'm heading next. Because there's been a LOT happening behind the scenes lately, and as more pieces of the bigger picture start coming together, I'm realizing there are a few things that could use some adjusting.

One of those things is my website.

Yep, I've decided I'm going to give it a bit of a rework before the end of the month. Because apparently having a full calendar, client projects, programs to finish and a whole bunch of other ideas floating around in my head wasn't quite enough. LOL. But here's the thing. My business has been evolving, my plans have been getting clearer and some of the things I've been working on are getting closer to becoming actual offers instead of projects living in my notebooks. So it makes sense that my website should reflect where I'm going, not just where I was when I originally put everything together.

And besides, Mercury retrograde is about to kick in, so why the hell not? LOL.

Now, before anyone starts telling me that you're not supposed to touch technology, websites or business decisions during Mercury retrograde, let me explain how I look at it. I've never been particularly interested in putting my entire life on hold because of what's happening in the sky. And while I absolutely pay attention to astrology and the symbolism behind different transits, I also believe we still have to live our lives, make decisions and get things done. Mercury retrograde is traditionally associated with reviewing, revisiting, rethinking and reorganizing, and considering that's exactly what I've been feeling pulled toward lately, the timing makes me laugh.

So instead of treating it like a reason to panic, I'm choosing to use it as a reminder to slow down enough to review what I've already created. To look at the systems, the messaging, the website and the way I'm organizing my time, and ask whether those things are actually supporting the business I'm trying to build. Because there's a big difference between constantly creating new things and taking the time to make sure the things you've already created are working together.

And if there's one thing I've been learning lately, it's that I don't necessarily need MORE things on my plate. I need the things that are already there to make sense.

That realization has been showing up in a lot of different ways over the last few weeks. I've been doing some pretty deep personal reflection, exploring new things spiritually, revisiting old dreams and starting to see connections between projects that once seemed completely separate. Yesterday I was talking about how those puzzle pieces are finally starting to fit together, and today I'm realizing that sometimes when the picture starts becoming clearer, you also have to rearrange the table you're building it on.

Because what worked six months ago might not work today. The schedule that made sense when I was handling everything myself might not be the best schedule now that I've got people helping me. The way I originally organized my website might not be the best way to introduce the programs I'm getting ready to launch. And the routines that worked during the summer might need to look a little different now that winter is knocking on the door and life around the homestead is shifting into another season.

None of that means I did anything wrong the first time around. It simply means things have changed, and I'm allowed to change with them.

And that's something I think we sometimes forget when we're busy chasing goals. We get so attached to the plan we made that we start treating any adjustment like a failure. We tell ourselves we should have finished more, accomplished more or somehow managed to squeeze another five hours into a day that only had twenty-four to begin with. And trust me, I'm just as guilty of that as anyone. I can look at a list of twenty things, complete fifteen of them and still find myself focusing on the five that didn't get done. Never mind that three new things showed up, two emergencies needed attention and I probably accomplished a whole bunch of stuff that wasn't even on the original list.

But lately, I've been trying to look at things a little differently. Instead of asking myself why I didn't finish everything, I'm trying to ask whether the things I DID spend my time on were actually important. Did I move something forward? Did I take care of something that needed attention? Did I make time for myself, my family or someone who needed me? Did I learn something, solve a problem or make a decision that will make things easier down the road? Because sometimes progress doesn't look like a beautifully completed checklist. Sometimes it looks like realizing half the things on that checklist don't need to be there anymore.

And sometimes it looks like giving yourself permission to have a slower day without deciding the entire week has gone to shit.

Now, I'm not going to pretend that I'm suddenly going to become some laid-back, go-with-the-flow person who doesn't need her calendars and lists. Oh hell no. LOL. I love my systems, and I love having a plan. They help me manage everything I've got going on and keep my brain from trying to hold a million little details at once. But I also want those systems to work FOR me, not become another source of pressure every time life decides to throw something unexpected into the mix.

So tonight, the plan is pretty simple. I'm going to knock out some client work, spend some time planning and start figuring out what needs to happen over the next little while. I'm going to look at the house, the business, the website and the schedule, and decide what actually deserves my attention right now. Not everything needs to happen tomorrow. Not every idea needs to become a project this week. And not every task that made its way onto a list deserves to stay there forever.

Some things can be moved. Some can be delegated. Some can wait. And some might just get tossed altogether.

And honestly? That feels pretty damn good.

Because when I really think about it, this isn't just about reorganizing the house or rearranging my business. It's about resetting my energy and my mindset too. It's about taking a little ownership over how I want the next few months to look instead of constantly reacting to whatever lands in front of me. I want to head into winter feeling organized, focused and excited about what I'm building, not like I'm dragging a giant pile of unfinished tasks behind me everywhere I go.

I want to enjoy the cozy evenings, the wood stove, the quieter moments around the homestead and the opportunities that come with having a little more time indoors. I want to finish the programs I've been working so hard on, get my website reflecting the direction I'm heading and keep making space for the spiritual exploration and personal growth that's been bringing me so much excitement lately. And somewhere in all of that, I want to remember that I'm a human being, not a walking to-do list with a coffee addiction.

Although the coffee addiction is probably staying. LOL.

So if today's checklist ends up looking completely different by the time I go to bed, I'm not going to lose sleep over it. I'll make a fresh one tomorrow, rearrange what needs rearranging and keep moving forward. Because the goal was never to become the world's greatest checker-offer of little boxes. The goal is to build a life and business that I genuinely love living.

And sometimes that means stepping away from the list long enough to remember what the hell you're working toward in the first place.

So here's to reorganizing the house, reorganizing the business, resetting the energy and getting my head back where I want it to be. Here's to embracing the changing seasons, making room for what's coming next and giving myself permission to adjust the plan whenever it stops making sense.

Because I'm damn well worth the time and effort it takes to create a life that works for ME.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got some work to finish, a wood stove that's probably calling my name and a to-do list that might just find itself in the recycling bin before the night is over.

Let's go Do the Dang Thang!
